Improved fitting of the Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse Model for hourly rainfall

چکیده
Abstract This paper examines the applicability of the Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse Model to rainfall taken from a site in Elmdon, Birmingham, UK. The approach used is to assess the performance of the model in terms of characteristics of the precipitation process, incorporating monthly seasonality. Analytical expressions are derived to complement those presented in Rodriguez-Iturbe et al. (1987). As in that paper, the shortcomings of the simple Poisson process are reduced by the use of a Bartlett-Lewis process. Different methods of parameter estimation are examined. The characteristic features of the time distribution of rainfall events, however, can be well approximated only by optimization and this enables an improved identification of the model parameters.

متن کاملRegionalization of the Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse Stochastic Rainfall Model
Parameters of the Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse (MBLRP) stochastic rainfall simulation model were regionalized across the contiguous United States. Three thousand four hundred forty-four National Climate Data Center (NCDC) rain gauges were used to obtain spatial and seasonal patterns of the model parameters. The MBLRP model was calibrated to minimize the discrepancy between the prec...
متن کاملModelling extreme rainfalls using a modi®ed random pulse Bartlett±Lewis stochastic rainfall model (with uncertainty)
A modi®ed random pulse Bartlett±Lewis stochastic rainfall model is used for extreme rainfall simulation. The model features the use of a generalised pareto distribution (GPD) to represent the depths of high intensity raincells. A point rainfall record, obtained from a UK site is used to test the model. Parameter estimation is carried out using a two-stage approach based on the generalised likel...

In a recent paper ((3)) a fitting procedure for the Neyman-Scott rectangular pulses (NSRP) spatial-temporal model of rainfall was developed. In that paper, the NSRP third moment function was fitted to the equivalent sample value taken at one-hour time intervals. In this paper, the fitting and modelling procedure are extended to ensure a close fit is obtained to further sample properties over a ...
